Sanford, Florida (June 7, 2002):
Military action between the Abu Sayyaf Group and
Philippine forces has resulted in the death of Martin
Burnham and the release of his wife, Gracia. Also killed
was Filipina nurse Deborah Yap, held hostage with the
Burnhams.
WHEN THE above news
release came from New Tribes Mission, and other
information followed, a variety of thoughts and reactions
were expressed.
There was relief that
the hostages were finally free after more than a year in
captivity. There was sadness and grief because of the
loss of life. People rejoiced that Gracia was reunited
with her family and is able to share testimony of those
that died and the year of captivity. There was praise to
God for his faithfulness, grace and sovereignty.
These events bring to
our attention a basic issue of the Christian lifethe
cost of following Jesus. Jesus said, "If anyone
would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his
cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life
shall lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will
find it" (Matthew 16:24-25).
Our Lord said, "Any
one who loves father or mother
son or daughter more
than me, is not worthy of me" (Matthew 10:37). Jesus
says, "Blessed are those who are persecuted because
of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven"
(Matthew 5:10).
In Philippians 1:29, the
apostle Paul says, "For it has been granted to you
on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also
to suffer for him." He repeats the thought in 2
Timothy 3:12: "Everyone who wants to live a godly
life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted."
Are we willing to follow
Jesus to this extent?
Many risk their lives
seeking adventure and thrills in extreme sports. The
slogan No Fear, on sportswear, promotes taking
risks. Some careers demand high risk. People die in the
line of duty and pursuing adventure.
How many of us
Christians are willing to risk our lives to share the
message of Jesus, his love, forgiveness and new life,
with people in hostile circumstances?
