Mirror, mirror on the wall

WHAT DO you see when you look in a mirror? Do you see shiny hair, smooth skin, a dainty nose, fine eyebrows and an expressive mouth? Or do you see the freckles you wish weren’t there and not quite perfect teeth? Are you beautiful enough? Do you pass the test?

This is an age-old question. Thinking that someone else is better looking can cause jealousy and even hatred. Snow White’s stepmother, the Queen, had this problem. She envied Snow White’s beauty and became unhappy and resentful. Jealousy haunted her. She felt compelled to ask the same question again and again: Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?

The Queen did not like the answer and Snow White’s life was in danger. She was exiled to the dark forest. But the Queen had no peace. She continued to ask the question and discovered that Snow White had survived. The Queen pursued Snow White. And because she could not live knowing that Snow White was more beautiful, the Queen was condemned to die.

Whom do you compare yourself to? Make sure you choose a well-balanced model, one who has more than a beautiful face. The Bible character, Daniel, is a good example. He had good looks balanced with wisdom, knowledge, understanding and the ability to serve. He trusted God more than anyone else. The King watched Daniel closely. The King tested Daniel many times. Because he trusted in God, Daniel came out on top. As a result, the King turned from his gods to trust the true God just like Daniel. Read Daniel’s story in Daniel 1:3-21, and Daniel 6.
